MOCHA SET FROM THE FAMILY SERVICE COLLECTION

In 1936 the Krásná Jizba design cooperative started to offer Sutnar’s second porcelain service collection, which was called the “Family Service” reportedly due to its low price and larger sizes.

As with his previous spherical service, Sutnar opted to base the design around a simple, solid geometrical shape – the cylinder. While the lines of the individual pieces in the dinnerware and tea services are derived from the proportional variations of a cylinder, the uniformity of the entire set is slightly disrupted by differing designs for the small high flat loop handles and the robust, semi-circular lid handles.

Dinnerware, tea, and mocha sets were offered in white with a blue line along the rims or in ivory with a platinum line. Production was commissioned to Epiag in Stará Role, a porcelain manufactory near Karlovy Vary; however, the service did not elicit much interest and any opportunity for more massive production was interrupted by the approaching war.
